A Client Content Brief Template That Cuts Revision Rounds in Half

What makes a content brief actually reduce revisions?
A brief cuts revision rounds when it encodes constraints, not just the topic: the client's voice, a specific angle, what to avoid, the recent-posts context, and the single goal of the piece. Most briefs list a topic and a due date, which is why the draft comes back wrong.
The five-field template
1. VOICE
- 2–3 phrases the client actually uses
- Tone in one line (e.g. "warm, plain, no hype")
- A link to 2 posts they've approved before
2. ANGLE (not topic)
- Bad: "write about pricing"
- Good: "why hourly pricing caps agency revenue, using last month's retainer post as the frame"
3. DO NOT
- Competitor names to avoid
- Claims that must stay soft
- Topics the last 3 posts already covered
4. FORMAT
- Platform + length + whether it needs media
- CTA (or "no CTA, this one builds trust")
5. GOAL
- One sentence: what should a reader do or feel
Why each field matters
- Voice is what makes a reviewer's first read a confirmation instead of a negotiation. Without it even a skilled writer produces a draft that needs three passes. See can AI match a client's brand voice.
- Angle is the difference between a usable first draft and AI slop — slop answers the topic, a good draft answers the intent.
- Do Not prevents the most common "actually, can we not say that" round.
How to use it at scale
Fill it once per client, not per post. Update the "recent posts" line weekly. Pair it with monthly batching so the context is loaded once.
Quick answer
- Weak brief: topic + deadline. Produces 3-round drafts.
- Strong brief: voice, angle, do-not, format, goal. Produces 1-round drafts.
- Cadence: one brief per client, refreshed weekly.
